Scottish Women's Premier League

Q&A #SBSSWPL 2020 – Suzy Shepherd, Boroughmuir Thistle

January 14th 2020

Ahead of the 2020 season, we’ll catch-up with every single Scottish Building Society SWPL team. From new Head Coaches, new signings, and new aspirations, it’s set to be another exciting campaign. To start, we spoke to Boroughmuir Thistle Head Coach, Suzy Shepherd. Her side will replace Hutchison Vale for the 2020 season in Scottish Building Society SWPL 2.

How are excited are you for the 2020 season? Extremely excited for the season 2020. We as a club were disappointed after thinking we had narrowly missed out on Scottish Building Society SWPL 2, so after the late promotion we are all looking forward to the new challenge.

What do you make of the changes for the new season? I think SWPL 2 was ready for the change to ten teams and having the play-offs is going to give it that extra bit more excitement to the final run in at the end of the season.

What are your aims and ambitions for the new season? With us being a newly promoted team, our aim is purely just to stay up and still be playing premier league football come next season.

Based on the other teams in the league, do you think this will be the most competitive season ever? There are some really strong teams in the league with a few fancying themselves for promotion, so it is going to be really competitive right from the start.

With the new season around a month away, how have preparations been so far? Although we didn’t find out until January that we were promoted, we had already started preparation for the championship which was going well. We now have four weeks to put some extra things in place.

Do you have plans to/have you had much change to the squad? What impact could this have on your season? We have added a few new players which is going to give us more strength and depth. Players we have added are versatile so this gives us more options.

For perhaps new fans of the women’s game, who are some players in your squad they should look out for? We have two very exciting young players in Addie Handley and Tegan Browning who am looking forward to seeing how they adapt to playing at a higher level.

As well, are there any new/younger players we may see more of in 2020? We have several good young players in our U19’s, Hannah Davie and Elvie McLean got a small amount of game time last season and am sure they will be knocking at the door shortly again this season.

You start the new season away to Dundee United. What do you make of that fixture? We start the new season away to Dundee United. It’s a fixture we are very much looking forward to.

How important do you think it will be to get off to a good start? We are no different from every other team and we will be looking to get off to a good start, but we also recognise that it is going to be a challenging game.

Finally, what would you say to encourage people to come and support your team this season? Whether you’re a regular fan or never been to our games, get yourselves along. We are a newly promoted team to SWPL 2 and looking for as much support as we can possibly get. We will do our best not to disappoint and I can assure you the girls give nothing less than 100% in every game.
