Glasgow Girls climbed to second in the Scottish Building Society SWPL 2 with a tight 1-0 win over Partick Thistle at Petershill Park.
Lucy McEwan’s fifth minute strike was enough to end Thistle’s unbeaten start to the season as Glasgow overtook Hamilton.
These two sides share Petershill and it was the visitors for the day, Glasgow Girls, who made the better start, going close inside three minutes when Chloe Docherty’s shot was kept out by Sara Robson.
Just two minutes later though, they did take the lead. The ball was slipped through to Lucy McEwan who was able to slot it under Robson and into the net.
John Doyle’s side continued their first half control and had another couple of chances, both of which fell to midfielder Emma Porteous, but she volleyed wide on the first occasion before being denied by Robson later on.
Thistle stepped it up a gear after the interval and had a glorious chance to equalise just before the hour mark when the ball was cut back to Emma Lawton, but the winger’s shot was tame and straight at the keeper.
Glasgow Girls were struggling to really create anything in the second half and on the one occasion they did, Chloe Docherty could only fire her shot wide of target from a tight angle.
Thistle had yet to taste defeat in SWPL 2 following their promotion last season and were determined to keep that record intact and almost grabbed an equaliser nine minutes from time. Bryony Ross bombed forward down the right and her effort across goal came back off the bar before the ball was worked to Becky Bisland whose curling effort was kept out by Toni Harkness in the away side’s goal.
With the Jags in search of an equaliser, there was one final chance for Glasgow Girls to wrap up the victory on the counter but Porteous’ effort was off target.
In the end however, it made no difference as they held on for the three points that sent them to the top of the table, although that was short lived as Hearts moved above them following their 3-1 win over Hamilton at Oriam.
Thistle, who are now in fifth place, travel to take on Hamilton next Sunday while Glasgow Girls are at Petershill once more to face St Johnstone.
