Partick Thistle moved to within two points of the top of the Scottish Building Society SWPL 2 table with a tight victory over St Johnstone at Petershill Park. Taylor McGlashan’s goal was enough to give the Jags a 1-0 win as they began the second half of the season with a bang.
After a quiet opening spell it was the hosts who moved in front on 16 minutes. Emma Lawton’s free-kick from the right was missed by Jade McDonald and Taylor McGlashan was on hand to poke the ball past Amy Henderson in goal.
It was almost two soon after when Henderson spilled Lawton’s speculative free-kick before scrambling to clear the ball off the line at the feet of Mhairi Hawksworth.
Saints were well in the game however and began to threaten the Thistle goal as the half went on, Ashley Fish seeing her effort held by Sara Robson before Rhianna Tweedie fired over after a neat one-two with Fern Newbigging. Robson in the home goal was called into action five minutes before the break when she did well to push Hannah Clark’s low effort wide of goal.
The Perth side continued to attack after the interval and had three quickfire chances early in the second half. Fish had two chances in two minutes, first being unable to divert the ball into the net before heading down into the ground and straight at Robson from Tweedie’s cross. Thistle’s keeper was performing well and had to be alert again five minutes later, denying Clark once more.
As the half wore on, Partick were content to let the visitors have the ball and that almost proved costly as St Johnstone pressed for an equaliser.
Rachel Todd was causing the Jags defence problems and she headed over the bar after a flick on from a cross. She then came within inches of a leveller when her cross came back off the woodwork.
There was one final chance for the Perth Saints as the game went into stoppage time with Tweedie heading over the bar from a corner as John Doyle got off to a winning start in his first game as Thistle boss.
Next week sees these sides make their first appearance in this year’s Scottish Women’s Cup, with St Johnstone hosting Boroughmuir Thistle while Partick Thistle travel to SWPL 1 side Motherwell.
