Glasgow Girls extended their winning run to four matches with a 3-1 win over St Johnstone at Petershill Park.
Chloe Docherty continued her good form with a double with Georgina McTear also getting on the scoresheet before Hannah Clark got a consolation for the visitors.
The hosts took just ten minutes to open the scoring and they did so in stunning style. A corner wasn’t cleared by the Saints defence and Chloe Docherty sent a powerful volley into the roof of the net.
They continued to control the game for the next half an hour and had a chance for a second from another corner but Danielle Gallagher couldn’t hit the target with her header.
Despite the incident, Saints began to grab a foothold in the game and would have been disappointed to hear the half time whistle go when it did.
Glasgow Girls began the second half brightly and went close to a second through Charmaine McGuire, but her shot was well held by Saints keeper Rebecca Cameron. Rhee Tweedie was inches away from levelling the score at the other end but she couldn’t connect properly with Niamh Irvine’s free-kick.
Jayny Saunders then forced Cameron into another save as the game swung from end to end before Hannah Clark shot over the bar from a good position for the away side.
That miss would prove costly as Glasgow doubled their lead soon after. A corner from the right was spilled by Cameron and headed back towards goal by Georgina McTear, with the linesman confirming the ball had crossed the line before being cleared.
Straight from kick off it was three as Saints lost the ball, allowing Docherty to get into the box before rounding Cameron and tapping home her second of the afternoon.
The goals kept on coming as the Perth side pulled one back two minutes later when Ashley Fish won the ball back before playing through Clark to slot home, although there were calls that the substitute may have been in an offside position.
Glasgow Girls then hit the woodwork twice as they tried to kill the game off, Lucy McEwan striking the bar from the edge of the box before McGuire saw her free-kick come back off the bar as well.
Clark continued to cause the home defence some problems but wasn’t able to get her second, seeing her header stopped by Toni Harkness.
The home keeper had to come off soon after however, following a clash with Stacey Penman and with no goalkeeper on the bench, McGuire took her place in goal for the last few minutes. She only had one save of note to make and that came when she kept out Hibs loanee Fish’s header from close range as Glasgow Girls held out for the victory.
With the SWPL Cup Final next week, these two sides don’t have a game but Glasgow Girls are back in action on Wednesday 15th May away at Hamilton while St Johnstone’s next game sees them take on Hearts.
Elsewhere in Scottish Building Society SWPL 2, league leaders Hearts were 11-0 winners over Hutchison Vale, Hamilton beat Partick Thistle 2-0 and Dundee United climbed to fourth with a 2-0 win over Kilmarnock.
