“Three points is all that matters,” said Rangers head coach Malky Thomson as his side continued their impressive scoring run in a 6-0 win over Motherwell at the Penny Cars Stadium.
A first Rangers goal from Chantelle Swaby was followed by strikes from Chelsea Cornet, Zoe Ness, Lizzie Arnott and a double from Kirsten Reilly rounded off a perfect afternoon for the visitors.
It keeps Rangers within three points of Glasgow City ahead of the clash between the top two on Sunday.
“Pleasing to get the three points again and ultimately that is what it is all about – getting three points in every game,” said Thomson. “Seventeen goals in two games, so yes really happy”.
Despite Motherwell’s heavy defeat they remain above bottom club Hearts, who lost by the same scoreline to Edinburgh rivals Hibs.
And interim boss Stewart Hall praised his side’s application and reserved praise for debutant goalkeeper Nicole Cunningham.
He said: “We have just came up against a side that has quality in abundance and they capitalised on all our mistakes. She [Cunningham] did really well, especially a girl that came in last minute as well – we haven’t even managed to get a training session with her, so yes she was brilliant.”
Swaby’s first for the club was a delightful finish from the big centre half; beating the Motherwell offside trap and slotting home an Arnott pass.
Five minutes later Rangers were at it again, this time the impressive Nicola Docherty advanced down the right, squared to Ness who played in Cornet to finish high in the Motherwell goal.
Next, it was Ness’s turn. Arnott again the provider with some lovely work on the right, slotted inside and Ness connected sweetly with the left foot to leave Cunningham with no chance. Her ninth of the season.
Reilly got in on the act in the second half as she poked home from close range. This time Swaby was the provider after she knocked down Arnott’s corner.
Arnott got her just reward as she slotted home her 12th of the season this time after some fine set up play by Ness.
Reilly capped off a player of the match display with her second of the afternoon after great work again by Docherty on the right.
