Hibernian Women picked up their first three points of the season against Spartans on Sunday in their Scottish Building Society SWPL opener at Ainslie Park. Rachael Boyle slotted home in the final moments of the game to snatch victory for her side.
It’s the beginning of a new era for the team as Head Coach Dean Gibson’s first competitive game in charge ended with a win.
Hibernian were left frustrated for most of the afternoon with Spartans defending well to limit the hosts’ chances in front of goal.
The two teams were very equally matched for the majority of the game, with the first half being particularly lacking in terms of chances. Arguably, Spartans had the better of the few chances, with debutant goalkeeper Sophie Allison having to come to Hibernian’s rescue on a number of occasions.
Hibernian started the second half with intent, with Lia Tweedie and Lauren Davidson combining to show Spartans a sign of what was to come. Gibson’s team dominated the second half, with several opportunities opening up for the hosts to go ahead.
The hosts kept probing for the opening goal, with a diving header from Shannon McGregor in the 75th minute being the closest chance that came before the opener.
That goal eventually came in the 94th minute. McGregor played a brilliant cross-field ball to Carla Boyce on the right hand side. She got control of the ball and squared it to Boyle, who made no mistake in firing past Rachel Harrison to win the game at the death.
The team now look ahead to their next fixture in two weeks time, where Hibernian travel down to Motherwell for the second match in the SWPL 1 season.
