Hibernian had “the wrong attitude” for 45 minutes before eventually defeating Motherwell 3-2 at Ainslie Park, said head coach Dean Gibson.

The Edinburgh side claimed their first three points since returning to the Scottish Building Society SWPL 1, but found themselves trailing through a Rosie Slater header.

However, a brace from Amy Gallacher and a well-worked team goal finished off by Colette Cavanagh was enough to move them back into fourth in the SWPL 1 table, despite Nicole Pullar setting up a nervy finish.

“It was a game of two halves, I think the first half we turned up with the wrong attitude,” said Gibson. “I think the girls expected to turn up and turn them over again, but we’ve always said there are no easy games in this league, especially for us – teams want to beat us.

“We had to adapt, and I don’t think we did that until the last 10 minutes of the first half, if I’m honest, we were probably fortunate going in 2-1 up.

“We didn’t take enough of our chances and we gave something to Motherwell to hold on to and we need to eradicate our mistakes.”

Both teams were coming into this fixture looking to put things right after their disappointing results in the previous week. Hibs had lost to Spartans while Motherwell had went down 3-2 to Forfar Farmington to leave them level on points with bottom side Hearts.

This was clear as it was a tentative start from both sides in the opening stages, but after Hibs had a goal disallowed it was Motherwell who broke the deadlock. A Claire Adams delivery found Slater, who drilled it in from close range on the half-hour mark.

Hibs’ quick response led to Rachael Boyle driving at the Motherwell’s defence and slipping a ball into Amy Gallacher, who skipped past Ramsay and slotted the ball in from a tight angle.

Gibson’s side piled on the pressure leading up to the break and got their reward after a lovely passing move. Boyle was through on goal but unselfishly squared Cavanagh, who tapped Hibs ahead.

Hibernian started the second half the way they ended the first. Handball on the edge of the box from Chelsie Watson resulted in Gallacher putting the free-kick into the top right corner despite Ramsay getting a hand to it.

The home side continued to dominate; Leishman cut inside to have her shot held by Ramsay, Adams had an opportunity to make an impact coming off the bench but fired her shot over the bar.

The visitors did grab a consolation in the latter stages of the game when Gardner’s cross was headed past the goalkeeper by Pullar.

Motherwell continued to push for an equaliser but fell short in the end, now losing their second game in a row since the restart.
