St Johnstone moved five points clear of the bottom of the Park’s Motor Group SWPL 2 table, after defeating Queen’s Park in a tight clash at New Tinto Park.
Ellie-May Cowie’s first-half cross caught out Rachael Caddell in the Queen’s goal before Morgan Steedman’s finish secured a 2-0 win for the Perth side.
In what was a turgid first half of football, neither side was able to create any real clear-cut chances with an Abbi McDonald shot straight at Megan Sidey after 17 minutes the first effort of the half.
On the half-hour mark though the deadlock was broken, albeit thanks to a goalkeeping error. Cowie found space down the right for Saints before sending in what looked like a harmless cross, but Caddell somehow managed to get her angles wrong and drop the ball into the back of the net.
The second half was marginally better, with the result put beyond any doubt on 63 minutes when Steedman robbed Ho Wan Tung of possession and showed good power to force her way through on goal before calmly slotting the ball into the corner of the net.
Saints almost made it three five minutes later when Helen Templeton saw her shot saved by substitute goalkeeper Sarah Rhind, before the Hamilton loanee got down to thwart Cowie on the rebound.
Queen’s Park did have two good chances of their own as they chased the game when Holly McIndoe stole the ball from Hannah Clark, but as she looked odds on to score, she instead lifted the ball over the bar.
Abby Callaghan also went close in the last ten minutes, but her shot was tame and easily held by Sidey as St Johnstone held on and moved to within five points of Boroughmuir in fourth place.
