The first ever winner of the Scottish Building Society SWPL Player of the Month has been announced as Rachel Donaldson of Stirling University. She won the September award through a public vote after being nominated by managers in the SWPL 1 & 2 divisions.
Speaking after receiving her award, she said: “I’m honoured to have won this. There were really impressive performances in both divisions, so it means a lot to have been voted as the best player for the month.”
Not only has Rachel been in fine form but so has her team this season. After an impressive end to the 2016 season, they have continued their form and currently sit fourth in the league with three games remaining.
“We as a team have been working hard and I’m delighted to be a part of that” she said. “This award is amazing on a personal level but I have to thank my teammates who have made it possible.”
Kerra McKinnie, Head of Marketing & Communications for Scottish Building Society, said: “We were delighted to become the first ever major sponsor of the Scottish Women’s Premier League. It’s a fantastic time for Scottish Women’s Football in general and with the end of the 2017 season in sight; it’s also extremely exciting.
“As part of our sponsorship, it’s our aim to help promote the game as much as possible and we see these awards as a big part of that. Being able to give players in both divisions the recognition they deserve for their performances is something we look forward to continuing.”
Rachel added: “Having a major sponsor like Scottish Building Society is fantastic for the women’s game. Hearing more about their vision today is great and I know that it will excite all of the clubs, players, and teams.”
Also nominated for the September award was Jade Lindsay (Hamilton Academical), Nichola Sturrock (Edinburgh University Hutchison Vale), and Corrie McIlravey Davidson (Jeanfield Swifts).
“We’d like to add a well done to those who did get nominated and a huge thank you to the managers and everyone who voted” said Kerra. “Details of the players nominated for the October award will be available soon at www.scottishbs.co.uk.”
